Privacy Policy

BuddyLog is built on a simple principle: your personal data belongs to you. This policy applies to BuddyLog on both iOS and Android. Everything you enter — people, notes, events — stays on your device and is never shared with us. We use Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics for anonymous usage insights and crash diagnostics, but these services never have access to the personal content you store in the app.

1. Data We Collect

BuddyLog stores all data you enter — including people profiles, notes, quotes, events, and first encounter records — locally on your device. On iOS this uses Apple's SwiftData framework; on Android this uses a local Room database. We do not have access to this data, and it is never transmitted to our servers.

2. Cloud Sync (Premium)

If you subscribe to BuddyLog Premium on iOS and enable iCloud sync, your data is synced across your devices using Apple CloudKit. This data is stored in your personal iCloud account and governed by Apple's Privacy Policy. We do not have access to your iCloud data at any point. BuddyLog for Android does not currently offer cloud sync: all data stays only on your device, in a local database. Android's own device backup service may include this data as part of an OS-level device-transfer or restore backup; that backup is governed by Google's policies, not ours, the same way iCloud backups are governed by Apple's on iOS.

3. Contacts Access

BuddyLog may request access to your device's Contacts to let you import people into the app, one at a time via the system contact picker. This access is optional — you can use BuddyLog without granting it. If granted, contact data is only read at the time of import and stored locally on your device. We do not sync or transmit your contacts anywhere.

4. Location Data

When you log an event, you may optionally add a location. Location data is stored locally as part of the event record. BuddyLog does not track your location in the background.

On Android, the address search field (used for event locations and person addresses) is powered by the Google Places API. When you search for an address, your search text — and your approximate location, only if you've granted location permission — is sent to Google to return address suggestions. This is governed by Google's Privacy Policy. On iOS, address search uses Apple's own MapKit and geocoding, governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.

5. Notifications

BuddyLog uses local push notifications to remind you to check in with people and to notify you of upcoming birthdays. These notifications are generated entirely on your device — no notification data is sent to external servers.

6. In-App Purchases

Premium subscriptions are processed entirely by the platform store. On iOS this is Apple through the App Store using StoreKit, subject to Apple's Privacy Policy. On Android this is Google through the Play Store using Google Play Billing, subject to Google's Privacy Policy. We do not collect or store your payment information; all billing is handled by the respective platform.

7. Analytics & Crash Reporting

BuddyLog uses Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics, provided by Google, to help us understand how the app is used and to diagnose crashes.

Firebase Analytics

We log anonymous in-app events such as creating a person, logging a note or event, viewing the subscription paywall, and tapping a check-in reminder. These events help us improve the app. Firebase Analytics also automatically collects basic device information (model, OS version, app version, language, and approximate region). No personally identifiable information is included — we do not log names, notes, relationship details, or any content you enter. Data is associated with an anonymous app instance ID, not your identity.

Firebase Crashlytics

If the app crashes, Crashlytics automatically sends a crash report to Google's servers. Reports include the stack trace, device model, OS version, and app version. They do not include any personal data you have entered in the app.

Both Firebase products are governed by Google's Privacy Policy. We do not use any advertising SDKs or sell your data to third parties.

8. Data Retention & Deletion

Your data exists only on your device and, on iOS with sync enabled, in your iCloud account. Deleting the app removes all locally stored data. On iOS, to remove iCloud data, disable iCloud sync in the app settings before deleting, or manage your iCloud storage directly through iOS Settings. On Android, uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data.

9. Children's Privacy

BuddyLog is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
